10 Most Wanted Video Games of 2009

If you thought 2008 was a big year for video games then check out a few of next year’s biggest titles…

(All release dates as listed on Amazon.)

1. Killzone 2
Format: PlayStation 3
Release date: 1st Feb (US) / 26th Feb (UK)

Though the over-hyped PS2 original was something of a let down, the long-awaited sequel is, nevertheless, the PS3’s most hotly anticipated game by a mile. And from the look of the tantalising screenshots and clips doing the rounds it’s not hard to see why: some of the best console graphics to date, gritty art direction and suitably intense action. Perhaps we can believe the hype this time – and perhaps Sony will get the major PS3-exclusive hit it so badly needs.

2. MadWorld
Format: Wii
Release date: 10th Mar (US) / 31st Mar (UK)

Wii owners can now breathe a sigh of relief, as they finally get a game to quench the sadistic, twisted bloodlust that has been slowly building up inside them due to the endless stream of lacklustre titles featuring cutesy graphics and family-friendly minigames (see previous blog for the Wii’s most pointless games). With some striking Frank Miller-like art direction and over-the-top gore this Sega title is sure to be a standout Wii-exclusive – and not just due to the game’s introduction of a new sporting event: Man Darts (it will be interesting to see how that one goes down with the Wii sports crowd and the mainstream media).

3. MAG: Massive Action Game
Format: PlayStation 3
Release date: TBA

It may be an early contender for the most unimaginatively titled game of the year, but there will be few reservations over the title’s descriptive accuracy. Details are somewhat sketchy so far – all we know for certain is that the game will be played out in staggering 256-player online battles with players assigned to squads of eight (hence the slightly strange number of 256). If the gameplay is as impressive as the scale this is likely to have online shooting fans raiding their savings accounts.

4. Resident Evil 5
Format: PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: 13th March (US & UK)

After the critical acclaim of Resident Evil 4 hopes are high for the forthcoming instalment of Capcom’s zombie franchise. Despite the controversy surrounding the new African setting, RE5 retains the series’ characteristic mix of stop-and-aim zombie-slaying and prudent ammo-management that has kept fans hooked since the 1996 original.

5. Afro Samurai
Format: PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: 27th Jan (US) / 13th March (UK)

The first thing you’ll notice about this slash ‘em up is its distinctive graphical style which utilises cel-shaded visuals to realise the ghetto-like feudal Japan setting of the ultra-cool Manga series. Featuring the original voice cast, including Samuel L. Jackson (as the eponymous Afro), Ron Perlman and Kelly Hu, and a soundtrack by Wu Tang’s RZA it should be, at the very least, a slick, entertainingly hip adventure.

6. Bionic Commando
Format: PC/PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: 9th May (US) / 13th Feb (UK)

20 years on and the classic 2D NES platform game finally gets a sequel. Despite upgrading to three dimesions the core gameplay remains the same with players acrobatically swinging around levels with use of their bionic arm grappling device (think: “mechnical Spiderman”), shooting bad guys and generally saving the day. If Swedish developer, GRIN, manage to implement the controls well, the sense of freedom and empowerment offered by the grappling mechanic could put this on par with the revered original.

7. Street Fighter IV
Format: PC/PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: 17th Feb (US) / 20th Feb (UK) / TBA (PC)

It’s been a long, long time since a new Street Fighter game was released with a different number in the title rather than just an additional “hyper”, “turbo” or “super”. As yet, the current generation of consoles has failed to produce a knockout fighting game, but, thankfully, Street Fighter IV looks set to Hundred Hand Slap the competition into submission with its mix of artistically-rendered graphics, extended character roster (including all the old favourites) and beloved finger-contorting gameplay.

8. Halo Wars
Format: Xbox 360
Release date: 3rd March (US) / 27th Feb (UK)

According to the makers (as reported in a recent Eurogamer article), “Halo Wars is going to do for real-time strategy, what Halo did for first-person shooters”. If that bold statement holds true this spin-off from Xbox’s flagship franchise could herald a new era of console-based strategy games, eschewing the PC as their spiritual home. Either way, with an established hardcore Halo fanbase, this game will probably sell by the bucketload.

9. Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Format: PC/PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: 3rd May (US) / 30th June (UK)

Those who enjoyed the outstanding Xbox original, The Chronicle of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, will get to enjoy it all over again in 2009 with retouched graphics and tweaked gameplay as well as a new full-length adventure tagged on to the end. How’s that for value for money? Those unfamiliar with the original will finally learn the visceral joys of this stealthy first-person sci-fi gem and enjoy what could turn out to be the bumper package of the year.

10. Aliens Colonial Marines
Format: PC/PlayStation 3/Xbox 360
Release date: TBA (US) / 31st Jan (UK)

The marriage of the Alien movies licence to the squad-based shooter subgenre is surely a match made in heaven. All early signs indicate that this title will borrow heavily from James Cameron’s awesome Aliens (1986) – a film which for the most part is the cinematic equivalent of just such a game. With the writers of Battlestar Gallactica on story duties and an immersive HUD-less view (in the manner of this year’s Dead Space) this should, unless something goes drastically awry, turn out to be a sci-fi experience tense enough to give you a nervous breakdown, oozing with atmosphere, excitment and, of course, acidic blood.

Have we missed some games off the list? Then let us know your most wanted…

  • Wrong, nobody is looking forward to ANY of these games.

Some examples of games that are most wanted:

    Starcraft 3,
    Diablo III,
    GTA: Chinatown Wars,
    Fallout 3: Anchorage DLC.

Killzone2 might be on that list but it won’t be at the top. Thanks, try again.

  • Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, HL2 Episode Three.

  • no final fantasy xiii? or versus?
no starcraft 2? no diablo 3?

Your list needs to be revised. This is fact, not opinion.

  • ohmygodyouforgotstarcraft2
    December 15th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

oh my god you forgot starcraft 2 !?

  • wow better not show this to my hubby he would want all the games. knowing him for xmas. I must admit a few I wouldn’t mind either. :)

  • This must be a hype advertisement

  • U.F.C.!!!

  • terrible list… seems like it was put together by blockbuster’s PR department. total shite.

  • starcraft 2 has no confirmed release date. for all we know, it’ll probably be pushed back even more, and therefore doesn’t (officially) belong on this list.

I’d also push to have ‘the conduit’ for wii on the list, perhaps even more so than ‘madworld’. look it up: previews say that it’s been mistaken as a 360/ps3 game (graphically), but with perfect FPS control mirroring that of mouse-and-keyboard. plus, actual online gameplay for the wii. sick.

  • Wasn’t the Aliens game canceled?

  • where the hell is prototype…

  • what a shitty lineup, none of these games r gna get rated high moron, wat about gran turimo 5.. duhh

  • are you stupid?

    final fantasy (all of them)
    starcraft 2

that’s it. take your newb list elsewhere

  • You must have forgotten that Halo Wars got canned a while back. Unless they’ve decided to dig it back up, that shouldn’t even be on the list.

  • Gee where are we going? I wouldn’t buy any of these Games. Every single one of them is violent and destructive. What happened to some really GOOD Games. Something Creative would be nice for a change!

  • uhm Assasins creed 2…

  • Anyone forget God of War 3?

  • Madworld and Streetfighter are the only games that aren’t played through a brown-tinted, excessive-bloom filter after having on that list.

  • I like my list better.

    1. God of War 3
    2.Resident Evil 5
    3.Assassins Creed 2

  • Dude You SUCK this is the worst list ever get a real job and stop embarrassing yourself

  • Prince of Persia ??? huh? HUH ?

    DIABLO 3

  • Yeah, this reads like a pure ad piece… Killzone 2 being the most awaited upcoming game, are you joking? The first was beyond flop, and the last thing PS3 owners are craving is another uninspired shooter. If you’re going to try and trick us into believing your hype, at least try to diguise it a little. Boo hiss.

  • title correction: “10 Most Wanted Console Games of 2009″

  • ok the title say 2009,
diablo 3 wont be coming out then
and i dont think the new GTA will.
idk about startcraft release date though.

  • what no, “Hello kitty, island adventure”? this list sucks

  • Halo 3: Recon anyone?

  • I thought the lists pretty good. I certainly don’t agree with all of them, but who agrees with everything on the internet? I also agree it needs Half Life 2 ep3 though

  • Ok, all these games look great, including the ones people are mentioning as “THE Games” >> Seriously though, this person wrote an article and had the cajones to put it up on the net, where people are most famous for acting like . . .well, as the above people prove, Fanboys and Fangirls. If one or two got canned from that list, big whoop! As for me . . . I’ll be waiting on Ghostbusters.

  • Reveers hit it spot on dude. Consoles are so 90′s and the terrible garble they call graphics is just laughable. Time to evolve kids.

    Diablo III
    Unreal Tournament 3
    StarCraft II
    25 To Life
    The Sims 3
    Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
    Duke Nukem Forever
    Galactic Civilizations II: Endless Universe
    World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
    No boxshot is currently available.
    F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
    BioShock 2
    Black Mesa
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

It’s gonna be an exciting year for real gaming!!!

  • ff13, GoW 3, GT5 and HL episode 3 arent even confirmed for next year so ya.
halo wars wasnt canned (will suck though) and diablo 3 didnt have the greatest reception from fans (still might be awesome). About starcraft; blizzard kinda pissed me off with the fact that they are gonna release 3 different versions of starcraft 2. If these are all full price its going to be even more of a let down.
I’m pretty scared for the UFC game as i dont believe there will ever be a proper control scheme which will cater for the technical ground game and will be very basic.
Anyways for me RE5 is the 1 im waiting for and there isnt really much thats known for next year anyways.

  • This guy is obviously a console gamer. He skipped absolutely any PC game worth mentioning.

  • uh, “me”, Unreal Tournament 3 has already been released, a while ago now. It’s still 08 last time I checked.

    -Bioshock 2
    - Diablo 3
    - Starcraft 2
    -Duke Nukem Forever
    - Killzone 2
    - Aliens- Colonial Marines
also possibly Doom 4, don’t know when it’s being released.

As you can tell, i like to kill things.

  • My idea of the most anticipated games are… “Meaningless opinion, which is posted in such a manner where it shits on everyone else’s opinion especially the author of the blog and makes mine seem as if it is the most important and should have been the only one to be considered. Oh wait and blah blah blah blah…”

  • HL2 Ep. 3
    Black mesa
    @me, UT3 has been out…

  • (Reveers, jtan, southpaw, Josh, reality check, and me)

Are you guys stupid? GOD your opinions suckHow could you even think that THOSE games are cool? Those aren’t REAL games!

    Blah blah
    Blabbity Blah

These are the only REAL games coming out next year! Man you guys are dumb!

  • I’d take Empire:Total War over Halo Wars any day of the week.

Diablo III should totally pwn, considering Blizzard’s success at RPGs.

Console gaming=kiddie gaming. Join the PC gaming master race, now!

  • Id have to agree with everyone on this list, i dont know where you got your information but you’re missing out on some serious must-haves. I actually feel the lists provided by posters are much better than your tripe.

@Carsten >> did you really just post that?

as far as console games? there are some games that simply do not come out for computer so we’re stuck with console games for some really good games.

However given the option, ill choose computer everytime

  • “Consoles are so ’90s”….yeah that’s why console hardware sales were $771 million for November alone. You can’t call Black Mesa, a re-release of Half Life using Source, a most wanted game by any means. And DNF, what are you serious, if even it does come out it’ll be an outdated piece of crap. PC gaming is dying and its not surprising when a graphics card can cost $500 and be outdated in 3 months. Even Valve, arguably one of the best developers for the PC, has started making console games and you ask why, because its more profitable. I’ll take my PS3 or 360 on my 65″ HDTV and 7.1 surround sound over a little monitor any day.

  • I smell a paid blog post. I have never heard of any of those games (save for Halo wars, RE5 and obviously street fighter)

Choose some true games. If that is the lineup for the best console games we can expect in ’09 then I am very glad I do not own a console.

Make a list of games people would REALLY want. it truly isnt hard

  • What about god of war 3?

  • This is a very niche selection, not the most wanted.

  • So we can drop $60 a pop for each of these to have more or less the same 15 hour experience: shoot aliens with huge guns, try to ignore the massive plot holes and suspension of reality while wondering who, exactly, thought this would be fun.

The exception is RE5 which I actually have hope for.

  • God of War should be on here for sure

  • HL2:E3, of course! And Portal 2, but no release dates for that yet- probably will get pushed back to 2010, boohoo.

  • Ditto the first 19 posts. Nobody is looking forward to any of these games over Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Final Fantasy 13, BioShock 2… the list goes on.

    Thumbs down.

  • diablo 2 is at the top of the list, or if your Korean, starcraft 2.

  • Riddick. Best Xbox game period. If you’re not looking forward to it you know nothing of gaming. Period.

  • Uhh, Starcraft 2, Alan Wake, HL2: Ep3?

  • This list really is pathetic. But then I noticed it’s on a U.K. website. What’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yes…shite.

  • Dumb list.

I’d say some would HAVE to be these.

    Call of Duty.
    Gears of War.

  • Am I the only one here who realizes that starcraft 2 isn’t coming out this year?

  • Why is everyone forgetting skate 2?!

  • Stfu you fucking kids
    December 18th, 2008 at 3:33 am

I knew the comments would be bullshit when the first post I fucking saw was someone wondering why Starcraft -3- wasn’t on the list. Fucking 3.

May I remind you retards that this is an opinionated list. I disagree with items on the list. I wonder why Diablo 3 isn’t there too. I don’t need to tell the poster to fuck off though. Make your own blog if you’re going talk with a log up your asses.

  • eh hem, Skate 2 and Diablo 3 are all that matter…

    end of line…

  • Three quarters of the list is kinda… yeh, lacking, but Resi 4, Halo Wars (which is being produced), Killzone 2, and Street Fighter IV are all looking good. Beyond that Starcraft 2(which will come out in ’09), Diablo 3(which probably wont come out in ’09), Infamous (a sleeper), Halo: Recon, HL2 Epi.3, Bioshock 2, and The Sims 3. Those are my top 10 (not including Diablo). Oh and the inevitable CoD 6 on Remembrance Day next year :P .

  • Tekken 6 anybody? I haven’t played Soul Calibur 4 but the new Mortal Kombat wasn’t really disappointing. But anyway Tekken 6 is gonna be way better than any of those including Street Fighter 4

  • I don’t I can put them in a set order, but shouldn’t this list have stuff like;

    Half-life 2: Episode 3
    Black Mesa Source
    Starcraft 2
    Diablo 3
    Sims 3

I bet that 65″ HDTV cost more than a graphics card… and I am pretty sure Xbox 360 has GDDR2 graphics rofl, console must be going up because there must have been a sudden outburst of 12 year olds

    @Annie Moose
They are making a Portal Sequel? VALVe better not ruin Portal, why don’t they just release a big map pack with new maps? The Plot was all tied up and it ended nicely.

  • What about Divinity II: Ego Draconis then?

  • You missed one. Darkfall.

  • STARCRAFT THREE!!! I have had it preorderd for a year now *sob*

  • I agree with Liz, you really ought to put NICHE ALERT at the top of the page. I’m a dedicated gamer, i play… too much… Both on PC and on consoles, and not a single on of those games appealed to me. Perhaps if you’d mentioned the fact that they were the games the author wanted most, maybe then you’d have less annoying comments, but I’m afraid that the way the article’s been written, you really were asking for it…

  • huh?! you are a loser, this list is horrible.

  • Only for the playstation crowd. And I hate playstation. None of these look appealing.

  • Why does everyone look forward to games with numbers after them??? I usually look for original games myself.

Seriously folks, GTA 13 and Halo 9 are supposed to be awesome!!!

  • Failure of a list.

“Halo Wars is going to do for real-time strategy, what Halo did for first-person shooters”

So it will bring absolutely nothing new to the genre? Well okay that’s good to know.
I hope the only thing they meant by that was popularizing that genre for the console market, because that’s the only thing remotely revolutionary about Halo.

  • Wow, Diablo III isnt coming out anytime near 2009.

Starcraft II wont come out in 09 either

  • I had heard of one of these, and the series of another. Am I that out of the loop or is this article just plain wrong?

  • Rofl @ this list.
No Starcraft 2, no Diablo 3.. You need to do some real research.

  • play online games
    December 19th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Resident evil is surely one of the most wanted video game. I’m really impatient! I’ve always been keen on resident evil. Tks for sharing this.

  • listen……
for all of you geeks out there raving about starcraft and tekken and all that shit…….you are a select few. this list was most likely compiled through market research and interviews. there are maybe 300,000 looking forward to diablo 3, but the new halo has a BUILT IN FANBASE of well over 5 million. do YOUR research before you start insulting someone else’s list

  • joonyer you’re a fuckwit. Diablo is one of the most celebrated games of all time. Your numbers are completely made up. For example, the sims sold 14 million copies, and the sims 2 sold 16 million copies. The sims 2 stands as the 3rd best selling game of all time (Pokemon and mario 3 beat it), yet the sims 3 (being released in 2009) is not on this list.

Clearly sales numbers have dick all to do with this list. Plus, just to correct you, Halo 3 sold 8.1 million copies, not 5 million.

Also, diablo sold 2.5 million, diablo 2 sold 4 million and the D2 expansion sold 2 million. Last i checked 4mil != 300k

This list was clearly written by someone who heavily favours console games… and not very good ones either.

  • Ha ha. List Fail.

  • Im looking forward to Killzone2 and MAG myself. Ps3 really needs some more games that will get peoples attention. For the PC im looking forward to Starcraft2. COD5 looks too much like cod4 with the game play of COD3(which sucked to me) so I don’t plan to buy it, I already played it at a friends house who tried to convince me to buy it.

  • Protip: Nobody cares about these games

  • Duh what about THE SIMS 3

  • Everyone is entitled to their opinion on ‘the list’, the biggest joke are the people who because THEY aren’t looking forward to ANY of the games think that they represent the millions others who are…

  • As a fan of all things Aliens, I am eagerly awaiting some Aliens Colonial Marines action!

  • MAN YOU FAIL! Put a bullet in your head stop breathing my air!

  • most wanted by who? you. another idiot with his top ten list……. I must stop this trend…. i put you in my list “most annoying list” right under ppl that point out spelling and grammar errors they paid you to do this then you should be fired

  • what you dont like comments then dont write

  • guy from the future
    March 2nd, 2009 at 6:50 pm

    hello people from the past(2008)

the most anticipated games are in fact diablo 3 and halo wars.

yes… Halo Wars is going to be released.

  • No Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2?
    And Fifa 2010!

  • [...] StarCraft II Format: PC, Mac Release date: TBC Last year’s most wanted video games post didn’t feature Starcraft II due to the well-documented fact that it wouldn’t be released until [...]

  • Halo didn’t do anything for first person shooters. it was an average one, that brought not a shred of innovation to the genre. halo wars is basically the same thing. the system is original for sure, but “original” doesnt always mean “good”. halo wars was mediocre and anyone who was seriously anticipating its arrival deserves what they got.

  • Where can i find some good starcraft 2 artwork, community not official ? thanks

  • Wow, I don’t have anything to pick up at Gamestop tomorrow. Its actually a relief, got stuff I wanted to do this week. Next week MW3!!
