Also consider the costs of marketing – I worked on Alexander with a budget of approx 150m and they planned to spend at least another 1/2 again on marketing.

Still a complete flop! Stone’s script when we started shooting was so different to film that was finally produced – the amount of movies ruined by producers and editors is extraordinary.

Spiderman was a waste of money in my opinion, they spent all that money, for nothing. At least Waterworld was good, it was worth it; not Spiderman.

These need to be adjusted for inflation,for instance a film like “Intolerance”(1916) would be so expensive today, it would not get made.Many silent pictures cost at least this much if the cost is adjusted to modern dollars,or pounds. Have you seen “Ben-Hur”(1926)? Huge.

Incidentally, the 1967 Russian-made version of War and Peace reportedly cost about $700 million in todays dollars to make (it took several years to film, so calculating cost is tricky.)

Cleopatra was adjusted for inflation.

Other note: It is common Hollywood practice to load down big budget movies with all sorts of losses from other ventures. This was especially true of Waterworld.

What about Sergei Bondarchuk’ Vonya I Mir (War and Peace), which took seven years to make, involved more than one hundred thousand extras and had an estimated budget of one hundred million dollars (seven hundred million in todays dollars)?
